Wednesday. I have been shown a second study. It is in crates, in a workshop in Perth, and it is the Doctor’s to the last paperclip.
Red walls. The mantel clock. The world map with the coffee ring over the Mediterranean. Stacks of expedition photographs, dated December 1903, which I took myself and which nobody asked me about. The carpenters, painters and electricians who built it have never set foot in Egypt, yet the sandstone is better than the real sandstone, and the hieroglyphs are spelled correctly, which is more than the Doctor ever managed.
I asked who had given them permission to copy the study. They said the management. I asked who had given the management permission. They offered me a biscuit.
I have decided to take it as a compliment. Two studies means twice the dusting, but it also means twice as many people looking for the Doctor, and I have always said he would be found by someone thorough.
