Entombed — answers for the expedition

In short: Every question about Entombed and its sequel Lost Tomb: Khufu and Dr Smith, prices in Manly and Perth, team sizes, ages, access, records and awards.

Khufu, Dr Smith & the curse

Is Entombed a puzzle hunt, a horror room or something else?

Something else: Entombed is a 60-minute ancient Egypt adventure, designed and built by Escape This, rather than a horror room. Your team is locked in the desert study of Dr Smith, an archaeologist who vanished chasing Pharaoh Khufu’s treasure, and must find what he found before his pharaoh finds you. It plays at Escape This Manly and Escape This Perth CBD, and its sequel, Lost Tomb, plays in Perth.

Who is the missing archaeologist in Entombed?

Dr Smith, a celebrated archaeologist whose whole career bent towards one find: the lost treasure of Pharaoh Khufu. In Entombed he has been missing for months and is presumed dead. His last letter boasted he was close, and his abandoned study, the room you play in, is full of what he left behind.

Was Khufu a real pharaoh?

Yes. Khufu ruled Egypt in the Fourth Dynasty, around 4,500 years ago, and the Great Pyramid of Giza was built as his tomb. Entombed borrows his name and the legend of a curse on anyone who disturbs a royal burial; the archaeologist, his study and the treasure hunt are Escape This’s own invention.

Why does the Manly version of Entombed mention a widow and an insurance payout?

Because Escape This Manly frames Entombed as a private-eye job. Your team are investigators working out of Cairo, paid a deposit by Dr Smith’s widow: with no body she cannot claim his life insurance. Proof of death or Khufu’s treasure will settle the bill. The Perth build drops the hired-gun angle and simply traps you in the study.

Inside Entombed

How hard is it to lift Khufu’s curse in Entombed?

Entombed carries a 7 out of 10 rating from Escape This. Most clues are in plain sight; working out what they mean is the hard part. Teams with an escape room behind them suit it best, but newcomers who like a challenge do well too, and the gamesmaster sends a hint whenever you ask for one.

Is Entombed a sensible pick for a first escape room?

Yes, with a warning that it pushes back. Escape This says first-timers find Entombed fairly demanding, yet plenty of groups choose it for their first game. A gamesmaster follows every minute on camera and can nudge a stuck team towards the right inscription.

How long should we set aside for Entombed?

About an hour and a half. Entombed itself lasts 60 minutes; arriving 15 minutes early covers lockers and the briefing, and around 15 minutes afterwards lets the team catch its breath and debrief. Teams that beat the curse early leave sooner.

Should a nervous player worry about Entombed’s cursed tomb?

Not much. Entombed is not a horror room, and Escape This says children’s groups love it. It does use pitch-dark moments, flashing light and a restless pharaoh, and Escape This warns that jump scares can happen, so mention any worries to your gamesmaster before you start.

What relics and rooms make up the Entombed set?

Entombed starts in a lamplit study with red walls, a mantel clock, a world map and stacks of expedition photographs, then gives way to sandstone, hieroglyphs, an hourglass, papyrus scrolls and a gilded sarcophagus. Escape This built every prop for its two Entombed rooms, and Manly’s was refurbished in the summer of 2025.

The sequel: Lost Tomb

What happens in Lost Tomb, the Entombed sequel?

Lost Tomb, the sequel to Entombed, begins at a deserted archaeological camp with its artefacts untouched. A sandstorm forces your team inside a structure that turns out to predate the Pharaohs. The dig has weakened not a tomb but the last barrier against a dark god, and you must descend and restore the seal or the world falls into endless night.

Does the series have to go in order, Entombed first and Lost Tomb second?

You don’t have to. Entombed and Lost Tomb are separate rooms with their own sets and puzzles, so either works as a first game. Starting with Entombed gives the series a natural order, from a scholar’s study to the depths below, and both run at Escape This Perth CBD for a double booking.

Is Lost Tomb tougher than Entombed?

On Escape This’s scale, a little: Lost Tomb is rated 7.5 out of 10 against Entombed’s 7. The game records disagree so far: 65% of teams have escaped Lost Tomb, while 44% get out of Perth’s Entombed, with 4.1 and 5.3 hints used on average.

When did Lost Tomb open?

Lost Tomb, the second room in the Entombed series, opened at Escape This Perth CBD on 19 March 2026, according to Escape This’s booking system. It joined the Perth Entombed, which has played under Hay Street Mall since May 2024.

Was Lost Tomb once a room called The Temple?

Yes. Lost Tomb’s game began as The Temple at Chambers Escape Games in Honolulu, Hawaii. As The Temple it won Escape the Roomers’ 2019 Bullseye Award for Best Overall and a Best of Morty award in 2024, and was nominated for TERPECA in 2021. Escape This then re-themed it as the Entombed sequel and relaunched it in Perth, so those honours belong to The Temple’s run.

Booking & prices

What does Entombed cost?

Perth’s Entombed and Lost Tomb share one price list: $49 per adult and $39 per child under 16 Monday to Thursday, rising to $65 and $55 Friday to Sunday. Entombed in Manly is listed at $59 per adult and $49 per child, though some sessions show from $39 when booking. Holidays are priced separately.

Can we give someone Entombed as a gift?

Yes. Escape This gift vouchers are sold on escapethis.com.au and can be spent on Entombed in Manly or Perth, or on Lost Tomb. They make a neat present for the history student, the amateur Egyptologist or the friend who rewatches every tomb-raiding film.

Who can join the expedition

How big can an Entombed expedition party be?

Entombed takes two to six in Manly and two to eight in Perth, where Saturday sessions need at least four. Lost Tomb needs four to eight at weekends, and takes pairs and trios only on certain days and times shown in its live availability. Groups beyond the limit book a second room.

Can younger children play Entombed in Manly?

Yes. Manly is the Entombed for families with younger children: 9 and up is the guide, 7 is the minimum as a paying player, and anyone 9 or under needs a parent or guardian playing alongside. If the youngest is 10 to 13, an adult waits at the venue instead.

How much English does Entombed require?

A moderate amount. Entombed’s narration and hints are spoken in English only, and some puzzles involve reading. Escape This recommends that most of the team be fluent, though one confident reader can handle the letters and notes for everyone.

Access & safety

Can Entombed’s tomb be reached by wheelchair?

In Perth, yes; in Manly, no. Perth’s Entombed and Lost Tomb each take one wheelchair per session, with a few puzzles harder to reach from a chair. Manly’s Entombed is not wheelchair accessible, so a group with a wheelchair user should book the Perth rooms.

Will anyone have to crawl through the tomb in Entombed?

Only in Perth. Perth’s Entombed includes a crawl space, and players who would rather not use it can skip it. Manly’s Entombed has no crawling, tight spaces or confined areas, which makes it the better choice for pregnant players or anyone with limited mobility.

Is Entombed all right for someone claustrophobic?

Manly’s Entombed is the safer bet: Escape This lists nothing confined there. Lost Tomb has no crawl space either. Perth’s Entombed has a crawl space that can be skipped, so a claustrophobic player should talk to the gamesmaster at check-in.

Does Entombed have dark spells or flashing lights?

Yes, both. Entombed and Lost Tomb run on controlled lighting, with stretches of total darkness and some flashing light. Escape This suggests anyone sensitive to flashing light chooses a different room.

On the day

Are phones or drinks allowed in Entombed?

No. Phones, smartwatches and cameras go in free lockers before Entombed starts, and anyone who has been drinking or taking drugs won’t be let in. Lockers cost nothing.

Where the tombs are

Where can we play Entombed?

In two places. Entombed plays at Escape This Manly, 2B The Corso in Sydney’s Manly, and at Escape This Perth CBD, The Basement, 712–720 Hay Street Mall. Its sequel, Lost Tomb, is in the same Perth CBD venue. It is not at Northbridge, Sydney CBD or Melbourne.

How long has Entombed been in Manly?

Since before it was Escape This Manly. Entombed was part of Room Eight, the independent Manly venue that opened in 2019. Escape This bought Room Eight in 2022, completed the rebrand to Escape This Manly in 2024 and refurbished every Manly room, Entombed included, in the summer of 2025.

The Manly venue and its rooms →

What changes between the Manly and Perth Entombed rooms?

The story is shared; the rules are not. Manly’s Entombed takes 2 to 6 players with a 9+ guide, has no crawling and isn’t wheelchair accessible. Perth’s takes 2 to 8, is strictly 13+, has a skippable crawl space and takes a wheelchair. Each keeps its own leaderboard.

Records, reviews & the makers

What share of teams escape Entombed?

It varies a lot by city. In Manly 87% of 2,396 recorded Entombed games ended in an escape; in Perth it is 44% of 4,058. Lost Tomb, the sequel, sits at 65% after 757 games.

What is the fastest Entombed escape on record?

25:14, set by a team of 4 at Escape This Manly with 2 hints and 34:46 still on the clock. That is the best time across the Entombed series, Lost Tomb included; each room’s own record is on the leaderboard.

Why do so many Manly teams escape Entombed?

The records don’t say why, but the gap is large: 87% of Manly teams beat Entombed against 44% in Perth. The Manly build is a different, smaller room for up to six players, with its own puzzle flow, so the two Entombed scores are best read separately.

Has Entombed won an award?

Yes, in Perth. Entombed at Escape This Perth CBD won a Best of Morty award in 2024, chosen from more than 50,000 escape games in 26 countries, according to Escape This. Escape This itself was named Escape Room Operator of the Year in 2025 and 2026.

Miss Plumb’s Field Journal

Who is Miss Plumb, and what is her field journal?

Miss Hester Plumb is Dr Smith’s fictional expedition secretary, and her field journal is a comic diary Escape This writes in her voice for its Entombed escape rooms. She keeps the vanished archaeologist’s study in Manly and Perth, follows the trail down into Lost Tomb, and each entry answers a real question, such as ages, crawl spaces or team sizes, with the true facts and a booking link beside it.

Read Miss Plumb’s Field Journal →

Will we meet Miss Plumb inside Entombed?

No. Dr Smith, his study, his last letter and the curse belong to the rooms; Miss Plumb, Humphrey the camel and the visitors in her entries were invented for the journal and appear nowhere in Entombed or Lost Tomb. No real person or expedition is described.

Could the field journal spoil Entombed or Lost Tomb?

It is written not to. Miss Plumb describes the red walls, the hourglass, the sandstorm and the pharaoh’s habit of turning the lights out, all things the rooms show you in the first minutes, but she never writes down a code, a hiding place or the way out of either room.

Does Miss Plumb ever find out what happened to Dr Smith?

Her journal never says. She keeps his study, sets a place for him at Christmas and wonders aloud, but whether the curse, rival treasure hunters or something else took Dr Smith is for teams in Entombed to work out, and what lies beneath the abandoned dig is Lost Tomb’s to reveal.

Are the dates in Miss Plumb’s journal real?

Some are. Escape This’s booking records give 20 July 2022 for Entombed at Escape This Manly (the room was there before, in the Room Eight days), 16 May 2024 for Entombed at Perth CBD and 19 March 2026 for Lost Tomb, and her entries for those days carry those dates; the anniversaries count from them. The other dates are chosen for the story.

How often is a new field journal entry added?

About once a month. New entries appear on their dates through 2027, each tackling a different question about Entombed and Lost Tomb, from pairs at the weekend and summer holidays in Manly to phones, first-timers and the leaderboard.
