Wednesday. A revelation over the morning tea. The old structure under Hay Street has been somewhere else before. Honolulu, in Hawaii, where it was called The Temple.
I put my cup down. The Doctor spent his life looking for one lost tomb in one desert. This one has crossed an ocean, changed its name and settled in a basement in Perth, and nobody had to dig it up at all. He would have been green.
People ask me whether it is harder than the Doctor’s study. The management says a little: seven and a half out of ten, against seven. It is a half-step, as they put it. I would call it a half-step down a very dark staircase.
I do not mind. A study can only teach so much. Down here one learns to read sandstone, keep one’s lamp steady and trust the person beside you, even if she is wearing a hat she bought specially and is very proud of. That was me. It is a good hat.
